How to Inject Your GLP-1 Medication

This guide walks you through the same steps shown in the instructional video below to help you prepare for and complete your injection safely and confidently. This guide is based on general injection techniques for subcutaneous GLP-1 medications supplied in multi-dose vials (such as compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide).

Always follow your healthcare provider's specific instructions, the prescription label, and any provided materials. If you have questions or concerns, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Do not use this as a substitute for professional medical advice.

GLP-1 medications are injected under the skin (subcutaneously) once weekly. Proper technique helps ensure safety and effectiveness.

If anything feels unclear or you have questions at any point, please reach out to your care team before injecting.

What You’ll Need

Before you begin, gather all of your supplies:

  • Your GLP-1 medication vial

  • Syringe and needle

  • Alcohol swabs

  • Sharps container

  • Bandage

Choose a clean, well-lit space where you won’t be rushed.

Preparing the Injection

  1. Remove the sterile cap from the top of the medication vial.

  2. Wipe the top of the vial with an alcohol swab.

  3. Remove the plunger from the back of the syringe and remove the cap from the needle.

  4. Insert the needle through the top of the vial.

  5. Pull back on the plunger to draw up the medication to the amount prescribed for you.

If you are not ready to inject right away, carefully slide the needle into an open cap to reduce the risk of accidental needle sticks and place the syringe in the refrigerator.

Choosing and Cleaning the Injection Site

  • Common injection sites include the abdominal area, thigh, or the back of the arm.

  • Clean the chosen area with an alcohol swab. You may clean up to two times, starting in the center and moving outward in a circular motion.

  • Allow the area to dry.

Injecting the Medication

  1. Remove the cap from the needle tip.

  2. Gently pinch a large area of skin, keeping your fingers far enough apart to avoid accidental needle sticks.

  3. Insert the needle into the pinched skin.

  4. Pull back slightly on the syringe to confirm you are not in a blood vessel.

  5. Slowly push the medication in as instructed.

After the Injection

  • Remove the needle and immediately discard the syringe into a sharps container.

  • Wipe the injection area with an alcohol swab if there is any bleeding, then apply a bandage if needed.

  • Place the medication vial back into the refrigerator.

Tips for Safety and Comfort

  • Never share vials, syringes, or needles.

  • Inject at the same time each week.

  • Common side effects include nausea

  • If you miss a dose, contact your provider.

  • Store vials refrigerated; do not freeze.

Contact your provider if you:

  • Are unsure about any step

  • Have trouble completing the injection

  • Notice anything unexpected at the injection site
